Twrkv's towering painting "Athene" now on view at Met

Now on view in the Modern and Contemporary Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is Jack Tworkov’s "Athene." Painted in 1949, this towering painting became a part of the permanent collection of the museum in 2006. It was a signature painting among the historic donation of Post-War American art from the collection of Chicago based collector Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman.

Featured Work (Nov): "Weatherman" 1953

Given the dramatic destruction brought on this week by Hurricane Sandy, it's only appropriate to highlight Tworkov's "Weatherman" painted in 1953 as our November 2012 featured work by the artist. Painted during the artist's Abstract Expressionist period, Tworkov brushes greys and whites in a composition that at once seems responsive to landscape but then seems more in tune to personal atmospheric unrest--even a reflection of the artist's inner psychosis.
